Our Maths Vision

Mathematics

Intent

At Mundy CofE Junior School, we aim to develop confident, resilient and enthusiastic mathematicians who can apply their knowledge and skills in a range of contexts. Our curriculum ensures that all pupils become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, reason mathematically and solve problems effectively.

Through engaging and challenging learning experiences, children develop a secure understanding of number, calculation and mathematical concepts. We encourage pupils to explain their thinking, make connections between ideas and recognise the importance of mathematics in everyday life.

Our goal is for every child to leave Key Stage 2 with the knowledge, confidence and problem-solving skills needed for success in secondary school and beyond.

Implementation

Mathematics is taught daily through a carefully sequenced curriculum that builds knowledge and understanding over time. We follow the White Rose Maths scheme, which provides a coherent progression of learning and supports pupils in developing fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills in line with the National Curriculum.

Lessons are carefully structured to ensure concepts are taught in small, manageable steps, enabling pupils to develop a deep and secure understanding before moving on to more complex learning. Teachers use a range of questioning, discussion and practical experiences to develop mathematical thinking and confidence.

The White Rose Maths scheme is supplemented by retrieval activities and regular assessment opportunities, enabling teachers to identify gaps in learning and ensure that key concepts are securely embedded before new learning is introduced.

Our curriculum includes:

  • High-quality daily mathematics lessons based on the White Rose Maths scheme.
  • A mastery approach that develops deep conceptual understanding.
  • Explicit teaching of mathematical vocabulary.
  • Regular opportunities for reasoning, discussion and mathematical explanation.
  • Concrete, pictorial and abstract representations to support learning.
  • Retrieval practice, including regular revisiting of prior learning through activities such as Flashback tasks.
  • Frequent times tables practice to build fluency and confidence.
  • Ongoing formative and summative assessment, including White Rose assessment materials, to inform teaching and support progress.
  • Appropriate challenge and support to meet the needs of all learners.
  • Opportunities to apply mathematics across the curriculum and in real-life contexts.

Teachers use ongoing assessment to identify misconceptions, provide timely intervention and adapt teaching to ensure all pupils make progress.

Impact

By the end of Year 6, pupils will:

  • Be fluent in key mathematical skills and knowledge.
  • Reason mathematically using accurate vocabulary.
  • Solve a range of mathematical problems confidently and efficiently.
  • Demonstrate resilience, independence and perseverance when faced with challenge.
  • Apply their mathematical understanding across subjects and everyday situations.
  • Be well prepared for the demands of secondary mathematics.

Pupils leave Mundy CofE Junior School with a positive attitude towards mathematics, a secure understanding of key concepts and the confidence to use their mathematical skills throughout their lives.
