Many thanks to all who came to our slightly soggy show on Saturday 15th June 2024.

It was a grand day out and enjoyed by many.

There are so many people to thank. We would like to mention Dave Vowles for taking such wonderful memories again for us.

See you next year?

Mundy C of E Junior School Annual  Horticultural and Agricultural Show.

We will be working over 2023 in order to hold our next horticultural show in 2024. Watch this space for more information.

A real community event!

On the third Saturday in June (12.00pm – 4.00pm) Mundy Junior School, situated on Lockton Avenue, hold a Horticultural and Agricultural Show on their school field and their adjacent Community Gardens. We have many successful shows under our belts, attracting  an estimated 1,800 visitors, and in doing so bringing a unique event to Heanor. Mr Gibbs, the Headteacher, explained, ‘We have been overwhelmed with the responses from previous shows and even during the events itself people were asking when we were having the next one. We recognise the importance of our community and value their involvement with our school and the show is a recognition of that’. Mrs George, the School Business Manager added, ‘We introduced Community Gardens to a section of the school field in 2013 and the idea for the show developed from there. We have always been an environmentally friendly school and we wanted to share what we do with the community rather than only selling our own garden produce.’ Everyone can bring along their chickens, ducks, rabbits and guinea pigs to be judged by experts and try to win best in show. The other competitions to enter include photography, various cookery sections, home produce and homemade wine amongst a range that should hold something of interest for most people. Winners will go away with a prize, rosette and even a shield!

An important element of the event is the show gardens competition. The school welcomes and as an environmentally friendly school they even recycle the flowers and tubs. Visitors to Heanor may well have noticed during summer the flower tubs outside a number of the shops, market place, Memorial Park, Mundy Street and the Town Hall, which is part of an initiative called ‘Heanor in Bloom’. The blooms all come from the  show gardens with the help of the children, staff and various helpers relocating the flowers from the school around the town. This is a joint venture with the Town and Amber Valley Council. The children, with staff in tow will visit the local shopkeepers to ask whether they would want more of the same this year. Last year demand outstripped supply but the school is hoping to satisfy even more shops this year.

If all of this isn’t enough, the presence of the traders from the monthly Community Fair add to the communal flavour of the event as well as a pony rides, inflatable bungee run, Ferret racing, apple bobbing, Whack a Rat, BBQ and much much more. For entries to the competition please either email the school on info@mundy.derbyshire.sch.uk or ring 01773 713427.
